General Clothing
The proper clothing is very important for the rider’s comfort and also for safety. For riding lessons or camps, breeches or blue jeans are acceptable. Shorts or sweatpants are not allowed. Please remember that the rider should dress appropriately for the weather. In warm weather, light colored shirts are recommended. Information on suggested winter attire is outlined below.

Safety Helmets
All riders are required to wear a safety helmet. We can provide for the first month of lessons or for camps, or you may purchase a helmet. The helmet must be ASTM/SEI approved (Troxel is well known brand), and should fit snugly. Troxel’s schooling helmet retails at prices starting at $25. White helmets are more comfortable for summer weather, black helmets are required for hunter jumper schooling shows. Covers in black and other colors are available also.

Riding Boots
All riders are required to wear sturdy boots with a low heel. Paddock boots, field boots, and western boots are acceptable.

Half or Full Chaps
Required for students learning to trot and canter. Chaps should have a snug fit, with half chaps coming to below the knee. These are available in colors, however for hunter jumper schooling shows they must be brown or black. Several of the websites listed below have information on how to measure for the correct fit. Full chaps are also acceptable, however they may be uncomfortable in warm weather. Tractor Supply Goodman Rd. Southaven MS, www.statelinetack.com, www.countrysupply.com, www.millerharness.com

The following is suggested for riding in cold temperatures. Please remember that students will be outside for a minimum of one hour, and appropriate clothing is strongly recommended.

  • Thermal Undergarments-top and bottom. (available at Wal Mart, Target, and sporting goods stores)
  • Thick winter socks or two pairs of regular socks.
  • Turtleneck-long sleeved.
  • Insulated sleeveless vest. (allows more freedom of movement than a coat/jacket)
  • Knit cap for under helmet or earmuffs
  • Gloves-snug fitting, warm, but not bulky. Should have textured grips on fingers.
  • Keep in mind that multiple thin layers allow more freedom of movement and warmth than one thick garment.

We do not recommend:

  • Long or bulky coats or jackets. They restrict movement and do not allow the instructor to have a clear visual line of the students form.
  • Sweater fabric of any type-collects dirt and hair during grooming.
  • Bulky pants-restrict movement.
  • Scarves of any type-safety hazard.
